When your baby latches onto your breast and begins to suckle, a signal is sent from your breast to your brain. This triggers the release of two important hormones: prolactin and oxytocin.

Prolactin tells your body to start producing milk in the milk-making glands, called alveoli. These glands take nutrients from your blood and convert them into breast milk.

Oxytocin causes the muscles around the alveoli to contract, pushing the milk through small ducts toward the nipple. This is often called the “let-down” reflex.

As your baby continues to nurse, your body responds by making more milk, ensuring that your little one gets exactly what they need. The more your baby feeds, the more milk your body will produce—an amazing system designed to nourish and bond you with your baby.
